Armed man steals ambulance and 'drives into crowds' in Oslo


Police officers in the Norwegian capital Oslo fired shots to stop an armed man who was driving a stolen ambulance, the city's force said on Twitter on Tuesday.

The armed suspect was apprehended however not critically injured, even if police reportedly opened fireplace on the ambulance throughout their pursuit. According to Bayer, the rampage lasted for some 45 minutes at which point another of the hospital's ambulances managed to ram the hijacked vehicle and pin it long enough for police to make the arrest.

It is believed police are searching for another person who may have been involved.

Photos from the scene showed that the perpetrator wore military green trousers, camouflage jacket and what looked like a bulletproof vest.

Police said those struck by the ambulance included a woman with a stroller and an elderly couple.

Police arrested the man after firing on the vehicle. "I heard several shots".

Television images showed a heavily damaged Mercedes ambulance with what appeared to be several bullet holes in the front left door.
