Indonesian chief security minister Wiranto recovering in hospital after knife attack


President Joko Widodo, who appointed Wiranto to the top security post, said he would visit him at an army hospital in central Jakarta.

A suspected Islamic State radical stabbed Indonesia's chief security minister Wiranto as he was stepping out of a vehicle Thursday, leaving two deep wounds in his stomach and injuring three others in the attack, officials said.

The attack came just over a week before Widodo's inauguration for his second five-year term in office.

Wiranto is wounded in the abdomen, and the minister is now undergoing treatments at a hospital in Pandeglang. Police said he was in stable condition and conscious after the attack.

Wiranto was seen being carried on a stretcher to a helicopter before he was airlifted to the capital Jakarta following the incident on Thursday.

The motive for the attack was not immediately clear. "He was arrested and the woman fought the police".

They were members of Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), an extremist group responsible for deadly suicide bombings at churches in Indonesia's second-biggest city Surabaya previous year, State Intelligence Agency chief Budi Gunawan told reporters in Jakarta.
