Medical examiner dismisses doubts about Epstein autopsy

Epstein was convicted in 2008 of sexual abuse charges, and was arrested again this past July on sex trafficking charges.

"The prominent hemorrhage in the soft tissues of the neck next to the fractures is evidence of a fresh neck compression that could have caused the death", Baden said.

But the medical examiner's office issued a statement to several news outlets on Wednesday, standing by its conclusion that Epstein died of a suicide by hanging in his jail cell in Manhattan.

Baden explained that the ligature, the item used to tie something tightly, allegedly on Epstein's neck was made from a sheet and could have DNA on it to provide more context into the death.

Dr. Lawrence Kobilinsky, a professor of forensic science at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, also said the hyoid bone is a weak, fragile structure, and it can break from a hanging.

"Those three fractures are extremely unusual in suicidal hangings and could occur much more commonly in homicidal strangulation", said Baden.

Attorney-General William Barr has promised a thorough investigation into how Mr Epstein died, though that inquiry has focused on the conduct of guards who were supposed to have been watching Mr Epstein the night he died.

Mark Epstein has been having trouble getting information from the federal authorities and the medical examiner's office about other possible steps in the probe, such as testing any DNA found on the bedsheet and interviews with the correctional officers on duty that day, Baden said. He has criticized the jail for "serious irregularities". Days before his death, Epstein had been removed from suicide watch, about two weeks after he reportedly attempted to take his own life. Both were working overtime because of staffing shortages, the people said.
