Sheriff's deputies in the Los Angeles area found an AR-15-style rifle, 100 rounds of ammunition, a list of names and a drawing of a middle school in the home of a 13-year-old boy who classmates heard threaten to carry out a school shooting, authorities said. The school in question has not been named by sheriff's officials.

A 13-year-old student and an adult family member have been arrested in connection with a serious threat against a South Los Angeles middle school, and an AR-15 assault rifle and a list of targeted students have been seized, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said Friday.

"The fact that people stepped forward" and reported what they heard allowed authorities to "prevent a possible tragedy today", said the sheriff.

Deputies initiated the investigation after receiving a call of the alleged threat, according to Undersheriff Tim Murakami.

Additional details, including the targeted school, were not immediately released by authorities. Villanueva later clarified the weapon has a serial number.
