President Trump warns of ‘carnage’ in rebel stronghold in Syria

Military escalation took place in Idlib during the last week through the ground advance of the regime forces and their control over 31 points between towns and villages in the eastern and southern countryside of Idlib.

Syrian and Russian forces have intensified their bombardment of targets in Idlib, the last significant rebel pocket of Syrian resistance, and President Bashar al-Assad has vowed to recapture it.

Turkish Presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Tuesday that Russian Federation would work to stop attacks in the northwestern Syrian region of Idlib after talks with the Turkish delegation in Moscow and that Ankara expected this promise to be kept.

President Trump also addressed the plight of civilians in Idlib in June, accusing Russia, Syria and Iran of "indiscriminately killing many innocent civilians" in a bombing campaign.

Turkey has backed Syrian rebels fighting to oust Assad in the country's 8-1/2 civil war, while Russian and Iran support Assad's forces.

In September, Turkey, Russia and Iran had agreed to "de-escalate" the situation in Idlib after a months-long campaign forced at least 500,000 civilians to flee from the province.

The region also hosts some three million people including many displaced by years of violence in other parts of Syria.

US President Donald Trump announced in October 2019 that the US will be withdrawing its forces from the Arab Republic, but eventually backtracked.

Over a million Syrians have moved near the Turkish border due to the intense attacks over the a year ago.
