Britain and the European Union laid down Monday their red lines for post-Brexit trade talks, offering contrasting visions for their future relationship that raise the prospect of clashes to come.
Britain left the European Union on Friday, but has now entered an 11-month long transition period during which it will attempt to strike a free trade deal with the bloc.
The sides have until the end of the year, when a standstill transitional period expires, to secure a deal on trade and future relations.
But the EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier hit back as he suggested the United Kingdom government was acting in bad faith having previously agreed to ensuring there would remain a "level playing field" on rules and regulations. The EU insists the fishing question must be resolved in a first phase of the negotiations, and on the basis of the current species quota shares for each party - again something already rejected by the UK.
"There will be two conditions which will be very clear in this trade agreement: we want an agreement on fisheries, which will be hard, on reciprocal access to waters and markets for British and French fishermen", Barnier told French broadcaster LCI on Sunday. "We have made our choice - we want a free trade agreement".

Forwich adds that "one of the sticking points, ironically, is a very small issue in terms of trade across the European Union, and that are fishing rights". That helps us fund This Is Money, and keep it free to use. Australia is now negotiating a trade deal with the European bloc.
The prime minister will use a speech in London later to call for a Canada-style free trade agreement - and threaten to walk away if one can not be struck.
A Canada-style deal would imply most tariffs on goods being eliminated. He said that customs rules will apply between the two sides, and access to the new market could be subject to certification, market authorization and supervision.
EU officials and some member states are dreading a possible repetition of Belgium's Wallonia nearly derailing the EU-Canada free trade deal in 2016. "We'll work to avoid that, but if we can't manage a deal by the end of the year there will be a cliff-edge on many fronts".
"The choice is emphatically not 'deal or no-deal, '" Johnson said in a speech to business leaders and global diplomats at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich on Monday. It also wants the European Court of Justice to have a role in settling disputes.

The Garda Technical Bureau has also been alerted and a detailed forensic examination in the area was being carried out. Gardai said a family liaison officer was in contact with their father Andrew McGinley and the extended family.
Laying out the enormous scale of the task ahead, senior officials at the European Commission, the bloc's executive, said there would be parallel negotiations with the British on 12 separate topics, culminating in an overarching deal.
"The UK will maintain the highest standards in these areas - better, in many respects, than those of the European Union - without the compulsion of a treaty and it is vital to stress this now".
In a sign that this too could be yet another flashpoint in the negotiations, Mr Johnson told reporters: "The UK will be negotiating on behalf of the entire UK family and that certainly includes Gibraltar and the sovereignty of Gibraltar remains, as everybody knows, indivisible".
"Humanity needs some government somewhere that is willing at least to make the case powerfully for freedom of exchange, some country ready to take off its Clark Kent spectacles and leap into the phone booth and emerge with its cloak flowing as the supercharged champion of the right of populations of the earth to buy and sell freely among each other", Mr Johnson said.
