After President Donald Trump called the recommended sentencing in Roger Stone's case "a miscarriage of justice", the Justice Department intervened to recommend a lighter sentence for the president's longtime associate.
On Monday, prosecutors recommended to a federal judge that Stone, 67, be sentenced to a prison term of seven to nine years, based on the government's assessment of his conduct under federal sentencing guidelines. Other Democrats accused Trump of purging the US government of perceived enemies following his acquittal on impeachment charges last week.
Mr. Stone has denied wrongdoing and criticized the case against him as politically motivated. Reports have also suggested Trump has drawn up an "enemies list" of those who crossed him during the impeachment fight.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) threw cold water on the idea of impeaching Attorney General Bill Barr on Thursday, saying that she is not going to "spend all of our time going after every lie the administration henchmen make to the Congress of the United States".
Speaking to reporters later at the White House, Trump thanked Justice Department officials for retracting the prison term recommendation.
Andy Rubin's Essential Shutting Down, Newton Mail Service Ending Too
Rubin was reportedly paid $90M to leave Google after an investigation upheld a sexual assault complaint filed against him. However, the company has shared its software on coding site Github so developers can "keep hacking" the device.
"People were hurt viciously and badly by these corrupt people", the president said, reviving his frequent complaint about the Mueller team. "The House Judiciary Committee, which has oversight of Barr, must also investigate independently".
And after the decision was announced, he posted a barrage of tweets attacking both the prosecutors and US District Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who will sentence Stone.
Trump this week also tweeted criticism of U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who is scheduled to sentence Stone on February 20.
"The Department of Justice is not in the habit of taking one position in court and then, without explanation, taking a startling different position on the very next day", the Bar wrote.
Virtuoso Angela Hewitt's $194K piano dropped by movers
He estimated that a top-tier, custom-made Fazioli grand piano would cost somewhere between just under $200,000 to $250,000. In 35 years of doing their job, this had never happened before", Hewitt wrote on Facebook. "At least nobody was hurt".
The key difference between Stone's and other cases is he also went down for obstruction and tampering with witnesses.
The Justice Department confirmed Barr would testify.
Stone said, "Prepare to die", referring to Mr. Credico with a sexual vulgarity and threatened to "take that dog away from you", according to court records. Democrats in Congress have demanded the intervention be investigated for political interference. And Rep. Ted Lieu, a fellow Democrat on the committee, said there would be hearings on the matter.
Senate Democrats have called for the Senate Judiciary Committee to call Barr to testify soon.
Impeachment managers conclude closing arguments, senators statements to take place today
A super majority, 67 senators, would need to vote in favour of convicting the president - which is considered extremely unlikely. Jones said he wants "to hear the arguments and some conversations from colleagues" before he makes up his mind.
